The Opportunities for Latin American Art and Culture in the Australian Market: Cultural Policy, Economic Potential, and Institutional Support
The research aims to explore the opportunities and challenges for integrating Latin American art into the Australian market, examining cultural policy, economic opportunities, and institutional support. Despite Australia’s diverse population, Diversity Arts Australia's “Shifting the Balance” report (2018) highlights a significant gap: 89% of leadership roles in visual arts, craft, and design are held by individuals identifying as Anglo-Celtic, underrepresenting diverse cultures, including Latin American artists. The research intends to address this gap by analysing the landscape for Spanish-speaking artists in Australia, creating a cadaster of these artists, and evaluating the cultural infrastructure that affects their visibility and growth.
This study’s objectives include assessing how Australian cultural policies shape opportunities for international, particularly Latin American, art; understanding how Australia’s multicultural identity influences the reception of Latin American art; and evaluating its economic potential within Australia's art market, especially in relation to emerging trends. Additionally, it will examine the role of galleries, museums, and universities in fostering Latin American art’s presence in Australia.
Key research questions focus on policy impacts on Latin American art’s visibility, drivers for engagement by Australian collectors and institutions, and how academic and cultural institutions support appreciation for Latin American art. The methodology will employ a mixed-methods approach: policy analysis, market interviews, case studies of institutions like the National Gallery of Victoria, and audience surveys.
With Australia’s art market expanding, understanding the specific barriers and opportunities for Latin American art is timely. The research seeks to elevate Latin American artists' profiles and strengthen ties between Australian and Latin American cultural institutions, ultimately enriching Australia’s cultural dialogue and highlighting the benefits of cross-cultural artistic exchange.
